The Curve installation is a two-part inflatable tube, with a diameter of 2.5 meters, positioned as two interlocking spirals. One enters the Curve, walks through it, uninterrupted, with the rhythm of the music indicating the pace. At the end of the first tube, in the middle of the installation, there’s an open space. Still slowly walking, the visitor enters the second tube, which spirals outwards and leads towards the exit. The whole experience takes about 20 minutes, and is as beautiful as it is dissorienting.
In the installation, the music (played in a seamless loop) is spread through eight channels, each going to four speakers, so the sound is very spacious. For this standalone version of the score, I tried to make a stereo adaptation that mimics that spatial quality as closely as possible. It might not be the complete 'Curve experience', but it might transport you to interesting places nonetheless.
Curve was first presented at Het Lage Noorden (Friesland, NL), from 22 June until 24 August 2024, then moved to Into the Great Wide Open festival (29 August 29 – 1 September, Vlieland, NL).

Het met twintig minuten maar net iets langere ‘Curve’ vangt aan met een vrij zwakke puls, als een polsslag, waarna we eveneens de branding horen, ten minste, daar associeer ik dit geluid mee. Het is alleen minder onrustbarend wat Zuydervelt hier doet. Wel spannend overigens, met die duidelijk aan ambient verwante klanknevels, die we vaker in zijn werk tegenkomen. Ook hier gebeurt overigens niet veel, alleen doet de ritmiek zo rond de veertiende minuut zijn intrede, wat wel past bij deze installatie, bestaande uit “een tweedelige opblaasbare buis, met een diameter van 2,5 meter, gepositioneerd als twee in elkaar grijpende spiralen. Men betreedt de Curve, loopt er ononderbroken doorheen, waarbij het ritme van de muziek het tempo aangeeft. Aan het einde van de eerste buis, in het midden van de installatie, bevindt zich een open ruimte. Nog steeds langzaam lopend betreedt de bezoeker de tweede buis, die spiraalsgewijs naar buiten draait en naar de uitgang leidt. De hele ervaring duurt ongeveer 20 minuten en is even mooi als desoriënterend”, aldus de tekst op Zuydervelt’s Bandcamp pagina. De fysieke ervaring moest ik ontberen, maar het mag gezegd, de muziek op zichzelf is niet minder de moeite waard.
