For Iván’s final choreography at Dance Theatre Heidelberg, he asked me to join the artistic team. A no-brainer, of course, since I had great experiences working on his previous pieces 'Hide and Seek', 'Attention: the doors are closing!', 'Exhausting Space', and 'Becoming' (also performed in Heidelberg). This time we went a bit bigger… bigger stage, bigger sound… just a bit more drama, I suppose ;-)
The water theme of the performance was a welcome source of inspiration for the music as well. Plenty of ocean sounds can be found here, along with watery synths and rainy eruptions. The music itself is kept fairly simple yet emotional, built around repeated cycles of melancholic themes.
From the very start, Iván came up with the idea of dividing the performance into three chapters, each based on a state of water: liquid, ice, and gas. This apparently struck a creative nerve, because the music came pouring out (…). It felt easy to associate with water in all its forms and to translate it into sound.
A big chunk of the final soundtrack is based on these first sketches, and fine-tuned in tandem with the choreography. Additional material was created during rehearsals in Heidelberg. This soundtrack album presents slightly re-edited/re-mixed versions of the score cues.
In the show there’s a giant floating piece of fabric, fog machines, wind machines, a floor that gets demolished, and a rising stage. And a whole lot of dancers, of course. All this action is obviously missing from this audio-only score, but with your eyes closed you might imagine your own nautical adventure…
PS Two longer pieces from the first music sessions didn’t make the show, but now appear on the separate album Fog/Drops.
