The Shimmering Nocturnes has been sitting on a hard drive for a very long time.
A lot of the original material was recorded back in October 2018, and I then proceeded to do absolutely nothing with it. When the long COVID shutdown came around, I revisited the recordings and started thinking about what I could do with them.
That's when I began contacting musicians I'd worked with, and a bunch of people very kindly agreed to contribute. Everyone was given a lot of freedom to do whatever they wanted with the material, and slowly, through file sharing, the record started to take shape.
It was a strange way to make a record, with everyone working remotely and adding their own pieces from wherever they happened to be. But it was also an amazing experience. The contributions completely transformed the original recordings, and I really love what everyone brought to it.
Rutger Zuydervelt and I eventually mixed the whole thing together, again entirely through file sharing.
I've sat on the finished record for years because I genuinely didn't know what to do with it. I think it's incredible, and I really love what the collaborators did. I briefly looked at finding a label for it, but in 2026 the whole process of trying to find somewhere to put a record out felt increasingly tiresome.
So eventually I decided to just put it out myself.
It's been a long time coming.
The Shimmering Nocturnes — finally, after all these years.
