Two sound works for the project Tussen-ruimte, a project by Office Jarrik Ouburg, Non-fiction and TAAK. Unused alleys in the center of Amsterdam are given a new function with interventions ranging from visual art and architecture to sound and various events.
Stiltetonen
A sound piece playing from a speaker installed in an alley at the Prinsengracht.
In a closed off entrance to the former morgue of the OLVG hospital on the Prinsengracht, sound artist Rutger Zuydervelt presents his composition Stiltetonen. He transformed the sing-along song ‘Aan de Amsterdamse grachten’ (Pieter Goemans, 1949) to a tranquil piano piece, where the silences between the notes are as important as the music itself. Because of this openness, ambient noise plays an important role in the composition, where the hurried pace of the city gives way to a stately calmness.

Grachtengroeven
An installation for the Tussen-ruimte exhibition in Castrum Peregrini, consisting of a 50's portable record player, and (hidden in the pedestal) two tone generators, a reverb box and a cassette player (playing a looped tape with a sine wave composition).
The empty grooves of a vinyl record form the space between the previous and the next song. Like the alleys between the Amsterdam canal houses they might seem empty and useless, but on closer inspection they are worlds in themselves. 'Grachtengroeven' (Canal grooves) positions the needle of a pick-up in a between space of a record and makes the void audible in a rhythmic soundtrack for the 'Tussen-ruimte' exhibition.
Running from 22 August until 22 September 2013.
